    As a little girl in Kosovo, Zana Zeqiri Rudi’s role models didn’t come from fairy tales or TV shows. Instead, she looked up to the ambassadors she heard on the evening news. She later became the first ambassador from Kosovo to Latin America and the region.

    Caroline and Liza haven’t met yet, but the nearly two-year-olds have been destined for friendship since before they were born. Their moms, Laura Carll and Tatyana Movshevich, have helped them become pen pals, shipping care packages between London and Erie, Pennsylvania. (The toddlers are not yet ready to write their own letters, but they do enjoy remote playdates through video calls.) Nurturing their daughters' friendship was a natural next step for the moms, best friends who have known each other since Ms. Movshevich's high school exchange year in America.  Liza's mom met Caroline’s mom on her first day of high school in 2004, in Blandon, Pennsylvania, shortly after the school assembly that introduced Ms. Movshevich as an exchange student visiting from Russia.

    Veronica Guzman tells her students that learning a language can open up their worlds to new opportunities. She knows because she’s experienced it. Her first language is Spanish, and she also grew up speaking English. In school, she studied Italian but later switched to Russian because she wanted to further challenge herself.

    Laura Garvie has called many places home, including the "Paris of East Java," Malang, Indonesia. She attributes her professional-level language skills to her semester-long study through the Indonesian Overseas Program (IOP) in 2016. Laura is currently pursuing a master's degree and continuing to connect with the Indonesian community in her current home, Paris, France.

    Naimul Chowdhury spent the summer of 2017 immersed in the sights and sounds of Tainan, Taiwan. The Florida native had not considered living abroad before, but the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP) changed that.
