Washington, D.C. — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) has announced that the Taiwanese Ministry of Education will now offer scholarship support for participants of Tradition and Modernity in Taiwan. The American Councils program provides students a unique opportunity to complete a semester at Tamkang University in Taipei, exploring Taiwan’s history, contemporary society, and relations with the People’s Republic of China, and learning Chinese. No prior study of Chinese is required to join the program; language instruction is offered at all proficiency levels. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates. Students receive semester academic credit from Bryn Mawr College in international studies, East Asian cultures, history, and Chinese language.
The scholarships will range up to $8,000 and be awarded based on academic merit and financial need. Awards may be combined with other sources of financial aid, including several American Councils scholarships, to cover program costs.
Since 2016, TECRO has provided critical financial support to more than 260 U.S. students on the American Councils Taiwan Intensive Summer and Semester Language programs. These awards continue to make a vital difference in the ability of U.S. students to engage in intensive immersion-based language study in Taiwan.
The new scholarship ensures that the Tradition and Modernity in Taiwan program is equally accessible to interested participants. The funding comes at a critical time, as U.S. students face growing financial obstacles to study abroad.
“American Councils has a long-standing commitment to making sure that all interested and qualified program participants can join the program of their choosing, regardless of cost. The new scholarship support from TECRO is critical to those efforts, particularly for individuals studying East Asian languages and cultures,” said Brian Gibson, Vice President of Academic, Language, and Cultural Programs at American Councils. “We’re deeply grateful to the Ministry for its incredibly important, ongoing support for students on these programs.”
