    Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) alumni in Dushanbe, Tajikistan were inspired to throw a New Year's party for 319 remarkable children at the Hissor School for Children with Disabilities. The alumni first met the children last fall, when they volunteered to teach English at the school, a large facility for disabled children in the Dushanbe area.

    American Councils celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program, which is responsible for bringing over 22,000 international high school students to study in the US. American Councils marked the occasion by hosting a reception on Capitol Hill with Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock.

    On March 14th, American Councils President Dan E. Davidson, PhD, testified before the House State-Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Subcommittee. In his testimony, Dr. Davidson addressed the vital need for continued funding for international exchange and training programs that focus on helping US and overseas participants develop a deep knowledge of our respective languages, cultures, and legal and economic systems.

    On her visit to Tajikistan in October, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton commended FLEX alumni and other young leaders for their commitment to creating a better future for Tajikistan. The town hall meeting in Dushanbe's Ismaili Center focused on women, youth, and building civil society.
