June 12, 2025 | Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia — American Councils for International Education joined the Government of Mongolia and the U.S. Embassy to mark the official opening of the Center of Excellence for English Language Teaching (COEE) at the National University of Mongolia. Funded by the U.S. Embassy and implemented by American Councils, the COEE will expand access to high-quality English instruction and teacher training nationwide.
Since March, the COEE has trained more than 200 educators through workshops led by English Language Fellows, Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, Peace Corps Volunteers, and other international educators. American Councils is leading a national needs assessment, coordinating with the Ministry of Education, the National University of Mongolia, and the U.S. Embassy to deliver U.S. government teaching resources.
“Establishing the Center of Excellence marks a significant milestone in our shared commitment to advancing education and fostering professional development for English teachers across Mongolia,” said U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia Richard Buangan. “This Center will serve as a hub for innovation, learning, and growth, providing invaluable resources and opportunities for Mongolian educators to enhance their skills and knowledge.”
The COEE builds on momentum following a 2023 law recognizing English as Mongolia’s official second language and forms part of the U.S.–Mongolia Excellence in English Initiative, a joint effort involving government, academic, and private sector partners aiming to fortify educational and cultural ties between the two countries.
“I am confident that the Center of Excellence will play a pivotal role in elevating the standards of English language education in Mongolia, ultimately contributing to improving human talent and making Mongolians more competitive in the international labor market,” Ambassador Buangan remarked.
American Councils is committed to advancing English education and international engagement in Mongolia—expanding opportunities for students, educators, and civil servants, and strengthening the country’s global competitiveness.
