Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative- Vietnamese (SEAFLI-Vietnamese)

Boren recipients receive intensive language instruction to reach professional proficiency in the Vietnamese language.

The Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative- Vietnamese (SEAFLI-Vietnamese) offers Boren fellows the opportunity for intensive language study of Vietnamese. The program is appropriate for applicants with no language proficiency as well as those with intermediate and advanced proficiency in Vietnamese.

There is both a domestic and an overseas component to the program. Applicants must plan to enroll in the official domestic summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in preparation for overseas study. The overseas program occurs in the fall at the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Awardees are also encouraged to stay overseas through the spring semester extension and must identify a program on their own. Options must include language study, but may also include additional coursework, academic internships, or research.

Launched in 2023, the SEAFLI-Vietnamese program aims to increase the number of Boren Scholars and Fellows engaged in studying the Vietnamese language. It is sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP). The summer program is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the overseas program by American Councils for International Education.
