The National Examinations in World Languages® or NEWL, is a series of online language proficiency assessments in critical world languages in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian. NEWL is a joint project of American Councils and the College Board, which offers its full endorsement of the exams. Through NEWL, U.S. colleges and universities now have a consistent means for granting credit by examination and/or assessing appropriate placement for a number of major world languages using the NEWL score.
How You Can Help
By becoming an official NEWL Test Center, you allow interested students to take the NEWL exam(s) at your computer lab. This is especially beneficial for homeschooled students or students whose schools do not have a valid computer lab. You help accelerate students’ college degrees by allowing them to possibly earn college credit through NEWL scores.
Your institution is listed on the NEWL website as an approved test center for NEWL, which gives your center an exposure, and informs students that your lab can be utilized for outside test administrations. (Exam administration dates may fall on different days each year. We will check the administration dates with the test center each year ahead of time, before assuming participation.) The test center will receive a certificate upon completion of the administration (per year) thanking them for their service and helping students further their education. The test center will receive $9 per student tested. (Test center forgoes its $9 for students who take the exam using a reduced fee.)
