The American Councils Summer Program for Russian Language Teachers offers qualified U.S. pre- and in-service teachers of Russian language and culture from both high schools and universities the opportunity to reach new levels of competency in Russian, and to experience firsthand the latest developments in the discipline. Advanced-level courses on teaching methodology, Russian language, literature and culture are led by distinguished faculty from Moscow State University’s Department of Philology. The program is six-weeks long, and takes place from mid-June to early-August.

The Summer Program for Russian Language Teachers is open to pre- and in-service Russian-language teachers and faculty. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are currently serving as high school- or university-level teachers of Russian language and culture, or graduate students who intend a teaching career.
Academics
The academic program is designed to accommodate the particular interests and needs of teachers of Russian, combining grammar and conversation courses with seminars in Russian culture, literature, linguistics and teaching methodology. Recent seminar topics have included: “Contemporary Russian prose;” “Russia today;” “Semantics and complexities of word usage;” “Russian musical culture from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present;” “A better way to say it – syntax and synonyms;” “The Golden Age of Russian literature;” “Russian folklore and folk culture;” “Contemporary conversational speech;” and “Using verbal aspect.” Classes are held four days per week; the fifth day is reserved for optional excursions, or for doing research in the library.
Housing and Meals
Participants live in the Moscow State University dormitory.
Resident Directors
Full-time American resident directors oversee the academic program and cultural program; assist participants in academic, administrative, and personal matters; and serve as a liaison between university faculty, administrators, and participants.
Financial Aid
All selected participants will receive substantial funding through a Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays) grant that was awarded to American Councils.
