The American Councils Energy in Central Asia Program offers students an opportunity to study abroad in Kazakhstan and gain new knowledge and competency in the Central Asian energy sector, business culture and Russian language. The program is designed to serve participants with interest in the oil and gas industry as well as the unique challenges of doing business in the region. It provides approximately fifteen hours per week of in-class instruction in Central Asia energy sector, Central Asian business culture and survival Russian language. All courses are taught in English by faculty of the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic Planning (KIMEP), the leading independent western-styled academic institution in Kazakhstan. Classroom studies are complemented by visits to international companies and organizations active in the region. Participants receive academic credit through Bryn Mawr College.

A full-time staff person oversees the academic and cultural programs; assists participants in academic, administrative and personal matters; and coordinates activities with the host institution faculty. Participants live in university dormitories.

The program also includes a five-day long visit to Astana, Kazakhstan’s vibrant new capital, where students visit large, global energy companies. Other program features include cultural events and in-country orientation in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
