Live the language you’re learning in this new eight-week program in Alexandria, Egypt for Intermediate Arabic learners. American Councils’ intensive overseas program for summer 2012, co-hosted by Alexandria University, is tailored to each participant’s professional interests and language needs. As the second-largest city in Egypt – a nation at the heart of Middle Eastern politics and culture – Alexandria will provide students with rare opportunities to immerse themselves in the Arabic language while exploring the rich cultural landscape of this Mediterranean port city. Students will learn to use Arabic professionally, live in dorms with Egyptian students, and engage in 20 hours of class per week, with four hours of weekly individual conversation practice with a native speaker. Cultural excursions will include an overnight trip to Cairo and the Pyramids; a three day trip to Sinai; and day trips around Alexandria, including visits to Montazah and Rashid. Cultural events include concerts, plays, and movies.

The program is designed for undergraduate students with Intermediate-level Arabic proficiency, equivalent to Level 1/1+ on the ILR scale. Heritage speakers are encouraged to apply, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required. Participants will receive academic credits from Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
