The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program provides full scholarships for outstanding students from underrepresented sectors of the Near East and South Asia for one academic year of non-degree, undergraduate study in the United States. The NESA UGRAD program aims to provide a meaningful exchange experience for a diverse group of emerging student leaders by equipping participants with the academic skills required for achieving success in higher education and enriching their experiences with activities such as cultural presentations, community service and internships. The program accepts students from 16 countries and the Palestinian territories in the Near East and South Asia. In the 2011-12 academic year, the program is hosting 82 NESA UGRAD fellows from all countries and territories except Saudia Arabia.
NESA UGRAD students are placed in diverse host institutions and communities across the United States. The students focus on academic programs that include American studies courses, academic skills and field of study courses, while also becoming active members of the community by participating in community service. The students also engage in professional internships, which allow them to explore their specific fields of study through practical experience.
The NESA UGRAD program provides the opportunity for international students and Americans to develop relationships based on mutual interests and respect for one another, while dismissing assumptions and stereotypes that are based solely on an individual’s nationality or ethnic origin.
