Educational Seminars: 2010 Greece Classics Program (GCP)

Eligibility:

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Have the educational equivalent of a Bachelor’s (four-year) degree and have a good academic record of achievement
• Be a full-time employee in the U.S. with at least three years of experience as a high school teacher or college educator of Greek, Latin, Ancient Studies, or the Classics before the start of the program
• Attend Washington, DC program orientation
• Travel to Greece, participate in pre-program orientation and complete full program in Greece
• Attend a virtual program debrief in the fall following the program

Length:

The 2010 Greece Classics Seminar includes a pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC, a six- week seminar (starting in mid-June), and a virtual debrief at the conclusion of the seminar.

Price:

This program is fully funded through the Bureau of Educational Affairs (ECA), U.S. Department of State. This grant includes Tuition for the American School of Classics Studies at Athens; partial room and board, and all travel within Greece required for the program; international and domestic airfare; meals and/or per diem; accommodations; and a shipping stipend for materials. Prepare to budget approximately $100 per week for personal mementos, purchases and souvenirs.

The Greece Summer Classics Program is a short-term, professional development opportunity for U.S. high school teachers of Greek, Latin, or the Classics and is fully funded by the Bureau of Educational Affairs (ECA), U.S. Department of State.

The program is designed as an intensive introduction to Greece from antiquity through the modern period. The program emphasizes the topography and monuments of Greece in their historical context, the interpretation of literature and historical writings, and how ancient sources may be used to interpret archaeological discoveries. U.S. teachers will have the opportunity to interact with one another and to share perspectives on the teaching of Latin, Greek, or the Classics.

Applicants should be creative, self-reliant, flexible and able to maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff, and fellow students in Greece. Applicants should have a sincere interest in learning from the experience of others and sharing best practices.
