On June 19, 2014, Secretary Kerry addressed over 600 high school students on the Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program from nearly 30 countries at the Department of State. The YES program brings approximately 900 students a year from 40 countries with significant Muslim populations to the United States to live with host families and attend American schools while learning about American values, and engaging in leadership training and community service. The Secretary highlighted the accomplishments of the students over the course of the year and encouraged them to become community leaders when they return home. Following the Secretary's remarks, ECA's Assistant Secretary Evan Ryan took questions from the students that ranged from seeking advice for young women finding ways to become leaders to understanding the Department's purpose in creating such exchange opportunities for youth. Panelists from the Department's six geographic bureaus answered questions from students interested in knowing more about the State Department's work and involvement in their home countries and regions.
