When I was 11, I remember waking up one morning to the sound of joy in my house. My father was listening to BBC News on his small, gray radio. There was a big smile on his face, which was unusual then, because the news mostly depressed him.

"The Taliban are gone!" my father shouted.

I didn't know what it meant, but I could see that my father was very, very happy.

For the past six years, American Councils’ staff in Bosnia and Herzegovina have recruited and tested approximately 3,000 students for the YES program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the merit-based program provides scholarships for secondary school students (ages 15-17) from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend one academic year in the U.S to live with an American host family and attend high school.
