Staff Profiles

Catharine Wilson

Catharine Wilson is Senior Program Manager for Faculty and Teacher programs. She works on a number of programs administered by American Councils including the Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP) and the American Serbia & Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE) program. She has been with American Councils for over 17 years. She spent 9 years in Moscow as the NIS Manager for Secondary School Programs and continues to work with the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX). Prior to that Catharine worked as resident director at the Institute of Steel and Alloys for American Councils outbound programs. Catharine holds an M.A. in Russian linguistics and literature from the Ohio State University.

Ben Dunbar

Ben Dunbar is a Senior Program Officer in Teacher Programs. Prior to joining American Councils in 2006, he taught English for four years at a preparatory school in Little Rock, Arkansas. He has also worked as a Peace Corps recruiter following his service in Turkmenistan. As a volunteer, he taught English as a Foreign Language, developed an educational summer camp for students in his region, helped train English teachers, and conducted methodology and curriculum development workshops. Ben holds a B.A. in English and Master in the Arts of Teaching from the University of Arkansas.

Eliza Doton

Eliza is a Program Officer for Teacher Programs. Prior to joining American Councils in April 2008, she worked for the Foundation for Community Betterment and the Curley Company, planning fundraisers and public relations. Eliza holds a B.S. in Psychology from St. Lawrence University, and has studied in Austria and Senegal.

Adolat Salikhova

Adolat Salikhova is a Program Assistant for Teachers Programs. Prior to joining American Councils, she worked in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for Project HOPE/USAID. Adolat has a Teacher of English Language diploma from Tashkent State University of Word Languages, and she is fluent in Russian, Uzbek, and English.

Foreign Languages Fade in Class — Except Chinese

"WASHINGTON — Thousands of public schools stopped teaching foreign languages in the last decade, according to a government-financed survey — dismal news for a nation that needs more linguists to conduct its global business and diplomacy...The State Department has paid for a smaller program — the Teachers of Critical Languages Program — to bring Chinese teachers to schools here, with each staying for a year."
